OK, I really want to hug one now 
heres my theory:
ever mixed cornstarch with water? well when mixed they form a goo. the goo is pretty liquid when you slide your hand in, but when you punch it, it becomes rock solid and you can possibly break your hand. my theory is that metroid skin is like it, except that it isn’t liquid and more like jelly.
that makes sense. I got this from Wikipedia.
(A person moving quickly and applying sufficient force with their feet can literally walk across such a liquid.)

Ok enough with that, so lets talk about the mini-metroids in Prime 2 and 3. The power beam made them pop just like that so I guest all of us are right about them getting harder skin when they get older.
