It looks pillow shaded because you’re technically pillow shading, you make the highlights to the center of several shades. I suggest to first make the complete lineart, then fill with the main color and add the highlights (bigs, smalls, whatever), then the darkest shadow, and then finally add the remaining colors.
Most possibly (havent zoomed) you have about 4 or 5 unnecesary colours there which only make you think they’re needed when painting, leaving no space for the next color.
Looking good though, I would reduce saturation some.
What do you mean by highlights (bigs, smalls)? I guess I understand the color issue. But can I fix it without reducing shades? So basically, sometimes you should skip a shade or two to make it more realistic? And what do you mean by reduce saturation.
Less saturation means make it greyer, pretty much. (I’m not 100% sure on the technicals.)
I wouldn’t “skip” shades, rather reduce the amount of shades you have and change them to fit the particular contrast level. You need to have your dark colors much darker than your medium colors, which can be grouped close together, and then have your light colors much lighter than the medium colors. If you have equal contrast between every one of your shades, it creates the pillow effect.
This is a saturation scale. Basically, the more saturated with color (hence the name) the more cartoony it will look. Reducing the amount of color thats saturating a single pixle implies lowering the colors, thus increasing grayness.
Ah, that makes sense, though In a relatively painful way. I always assumed that you wanted equal contrast between shades, but I didn’t think it would be effected by the number of them.
So even if I want to keep the current number of shades, I’d have to make them MUCH more contrasting.
Godamnit that’s the most ridiculous spam I’ve ever seen, if you both didn’t notice this is a thread about Red Halberd’s sprites, not a welcome back thread.
Well…thanks for posting in my thread…I thought I had some good comments to come look at.
Sloth already laid down the hammer, so I’ll just say that mabye you could have commented my new shwag, and everyone elses, so you could see for yourself what’s new.
I think your MPH sprites look ok, but I don’t really like the Noxus one. The Trooper sprikes look descent but the gun grows when he aims it at a diagnole.
Check on TSR, and you can see the updated versions of Sylux, Kanden, and Weavel. I gave up on Remaking the rest of them, and somebody already made a better version of the GF troopers.
