Bah. The lack of map made them more adventurous and fun if ya ask me. And SM’s graphics were nowehre near as good as a lot of other SNES games. Donkey Kong? Mario RPG? Megaman X2? Killer Instinct? Hell, just look at the Godzilla games. Crappy as they were, now THAT was a good example of well-sprited giant monsters. And it’s not the quality of SMs that bothers me so much as it is the designs. Ridley has a freaking beard, Samus in the power suit is GREEN (…), the suit changes shapes in the front view but the side view is always the same besides colors, the backgrounds are repetetive as hell, and probably a lot more.
Aside from Ridley, though, the bosses were quite impressive. Especially Draygon and Phantoon. Kraid was pretty damn cool, but he didn’t move enough to have much impact.
